Autism Spectrum Disorder ( Asd ) - 1774 Words

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which is known to include repetitive behaviors, specific patterns of behavior, and difficulty with social communication and interaction (ninds.nih.gov). Since this disorder is on a spectrum, it doesn’t affect every child the same. This spectrum includes different symptoms, skills, and different levels of impairment in the child’s life. ASD is four times more common among boys than girls (Kumar et.al., 2012). The â€Å"Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 68 children will develop ASD†. The symptoms for this disorder start to become apparent in infancy and early childhood. Certain developmental milestones are not reached in infants and children who suffer†¦show more content†¦These interventions are designed to help improve specific symptoms that the child may be suffering from. Since not all children suffer from ASD to the same degree, each treatment plan is different and is created in order to meet the specific needs of each child. Even though much is known on the development of autism, there is still no specific treatments that can cure the symptoms of autism (DRUG THERAPY). More research must be conducted in order to find better ways to prevent or treat autism. There is a wide variety of symptoms that children with autism tend to display. Social development is greatly different than the typical child. Early in life most infants love being social and affectionate. They find ways to interact and get attention from their environment by smiling, making eye contact, turning their head towards voices, and grasping at fingers (autismhelp.org). Most infants usually seek their parents for comfort, but in some autistic children, they lack the emotional attachment that is present in most children. Typical social interactions are an extremely difficult task (ninds.nih.gov). Most require the need to learn how to manage social interactions in order to function properly in a societal setting. Autistic children also lack a â€Å"theory of mind† which is described as being able to see something from the perspective of another person (autism-help.org). By age

Hinduism Paper Hum free essay sample

The Hindu religion is a massive collaboration of teachings, beliefs, ceremonies, rituals, and deities. Sanatana Dharma is another way to describe Hinduism because Sanatana describes the eternal, and Dharma describes ageless. This reflects the belief that the truths of Hinduism have always existed. It includes such a variety of expressions that it is difficult to define Hinduism proper. It encompasses the extremes of abstinence and sensuality, deity devotion and philosophical abstraction, and also major differences in the material and metaphysical world. The commonality of many of the systems that Hinduism is based, are the Vedas. They are the ancient metaphysical teachings that are said not to have been written by humans. The three parts are the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas and the Upanishads. The most practiced systems of Hinduism that relate to the Vedas are Samkhya, Advaita, Vedanta, and yoga. Many cultural and societal influences have become the foundation of Indian society because of the Vedic age. We will write a custom essay sample on Hinduism Paper Hum or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page During the Vedic age, Brahmins were priests and philosophers that had to maintain spiritual purity so the orderly workings of society divided the people into castes. The Brahmins were at the top because of their spiritual and holy place. Next there was the nobility class which included kings, warriors and vassals. They protected society as a whole and functioned as the government. Vaishayas were basically the business class. Mostly white collar workers, economists, businessmen, farmers and merchants all filled this class. The next class, the shudra, was artisans and manual laborers.A fifth class had developed over time which would be considered the poorest class. The untouchables, as they were known, held mainly the worst jobs of waste management and street sweeping which made them literally untouchable. The Vedic tradition over time had been evolving into a controlling entity instead of a religion. It was becoming increasingly controlled by the Brahmins and the caste system became hereditary. The castes system itself had become just as important as the original teachings of the Vedas for several centuries. Not until Ghandi had anyone truly challenged the system and renamed the untouchables to, â€Å"the children of God. † The deep rooted programming of the caste system still resides today and dictates whether or not people will get married even though it has been abolished since the 1940’s. Hinduism influences their society in a few other ways as well. For example, some families choose a Caesarean section in order to select the best time for their child to be born due to the fact that the ancient practice of astrology is so highly regarded. The desire to be released from the earthly experience has to do with escaping the ever-present presence of karma. Karma is circular and simply put, universal justice. Being born, dying and being reborn in order to learn the lessons presented before us can be an infinite trip. The ultimate goal, that is to separate from the infinite karma into the upper levels of the self and higher consciousness, just seems to make sense. Gatsby One of the Socially Elite Essay Example For Students

Gatsby One of the Socially Elite Essay The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald portrayed the views, beliefs, and actions of the socially elite of nineteen-twenties America. Fitzgerald was not biased for or against the rich; he simply chronicled the lives of his characters and how money and class separated people. The best example of this was life of the title character himself, Jay Gatsby. Inquiring minds want to know, â€Å"Who is Gatsby, and what makes him so great?†The novel begins with the introduction of the narrator, Nick Carraway. After fighting in World War I, Nick left his prominent family in the West to move to West Egg near New York City to learn the bond business. Despite the original plan to live with an associate, Nick ends up living alone next door to a mansion in which Jay Gatsby resides. We will write a custom essay on Gatsby One of the Socially Elite specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In the first of several documented gatherings, Nick spent the afternoon with Daisy, his distant cousin, Tom, her husband, and Jordan Baker, a prominent golfer. That was the first time Nick heard about Gatsby and his extravagant parties. The afternoon also uncovered Daisy’s suspicion of Tom’s unfaithfulness. Her suspicion was confirmed to Nick in the next chapter when he accompanied Tom to New York. Half way through the train ride, they stopped at an auto garage to speak to George Wilson about a car Tom was supposed to sell him. When Wilson went to his office for a moment, his wife, Myrtle appeared. Tom told her that he wanted to see her and to take the next train to New York. When Wilson reappeared, Myrtle announced that she was going to visit her sister that afternoon. That evening Nick, Tom, and Myrtle rendezvoused with others in the apartment that Tom had purchased for them. It was during this time that Nick was informed of the fact that neither Tom nor Myrtle could stand their spouses. Every weekend, Nick’s neighbor, Gatsby, held extravagant parties at his house. One morning, Gatsby’s butler came to Nick’s house and invited him to the party that evening. It was there that Nick met up once again with Jordan and eventually was introduced to the infamous Gatsby. Later in the night Jordan and Gatsby disappeared for an hour after which Nick said goodbye to Jordan and Gatsby and went home. One morning in July, Gatsby went to Nick’s house and proclaimed that the two were going to the city for lunch. During the long ride there Gatsby told Nick the story of his life, which Nick later discovered to be completely false. He then told Nick that he was going to make a large request of him, but that he could not ask him himself and Jordan was going to tell him later that day when they went out to tea. When the two men arrived in New York City, they had lunch with Meyer Wolfsheim, the â€Å"man who fixed the World Series in 1919.† When they were leaving Nick recognized Tom and introduced Gatsby and Tom to each other. Before the three could begin talking, Gatsby had left. At tea with Jordan, Nick learned the whole story about Daisy and Gatsby, and how they fell in love, but then Gatsby had to leave for the war. Daisy had married Tom, thinking that Gatsby would never return. It was also no coincidence that Gatsby lived so close to Daisy; he had bought that house so that he could be just across the bay from Daisy. It was at that point that Nick was informed of the favor he was to perform. Gatsby wanted Jordan to ask Nick if he could invite Daisy over for tea so that Gatsby could â€Å"pop in.†Nick arranged the tea, telling Daisy specifically not to bring Tom. At first there was nothing but awkward pauses between the couple, but after much prodding from Nick, Gatsby and Daisy began to talk. Then Gatsby suggested that the three of them go look at his house. It was there that Nick left the couple completely engrossed in one another. After that Nick did not see much of Gatsby for several weeks. That is until the party that both Daisy and her husband attended. When Nick finally met up with Gatsby at the end of the night, Gatsby was depressed because Daisy did not enjoy herself. Nick suggested that maybe it was not possible for Gatsby to repeat the past with Daisy, a notion that Gatsby quickly rejected. .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d , .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .postImageUrl , .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d , .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:hover , .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:visited , .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:active { border:0!important; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:active , .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubb305230240124fbba0efbeca449748d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Nutrition and School EssayAt Daisy’s request, Nick was invited to her house for tea with Jordan and Gatsby. Tom was in and out of the salon answering phone calls and getting drinks. After much tension, the group decided to go into New York. Daisy and Gatsby rode in Tom’s car and Tom, Jordan and Nick rode in Gatsby’s car. Tom had to stop for gas at Wilson’s garage where Wilson informed Tom that he was taking his wife out west because he had recently discovered that she was having an affair. Tom quickly left and caught up with Gatsby and Daisy. The group finally decided to meet at the Plaza Hotel and rent a room for the afternoon. Tension began to mount when Tom began to ask Gatsby questions about his past. During the verbal assault, Gatsby burst out that Daisy had never loved Tom and forced Daisy to admit the same. She reluctantly obeyed, but then took it back. It was then that Daisy told Tom that she was leaving him. At that point Gatsby and Daisy left the city in Gatsby’s car. Daisy drove on the way home. As she passed Wilson’s garage, Myrtle ran out in front of the car because she thought Tom was coming to take her away. The car hit her and killed her instantly. Daisy kept going and she and Gatsby took the car to Gatsby’s house and called a taxi to take them to her house. Tom, Jordan, and Nick passed the scene later and discovered what had happened. Tom immediately blamed Gatsby for killing Myrtle. The next morning, Nick went over to Gatsby’s house and they sat around for a while. After they had finished breakfast, Nick had to leave to catch his train for work. He left Gatsby at home alone, that is until Wilson showed up to kill him. Early that morning Wilson arrived at the Buchanan residence with a gun and Tom told him whose car had killed his wife. Late in the afternoon Gatsby decided to use his swimming pool, which is where he was found shot to death. Wilson was found dead in the woods nearby. In the next few days, Nick arranged the funeral. He called Daisy to tell her what had happened, but she and Tom had left for a lengthy vacation in Europe. He called all of the acquaintances of Gatsby’s that he could think of. In the end only three people showed up on the rainy day of the funeral. After the funeral, Nick was haunted by the events of the summer. He met with Jordan who informed him that she was engaged to another man, and he ran into Tom who explained what had happened to Daisy and himself. After all this Nick returned to his home in the west. What made Gatsby so great was what most people did not even know about him. His greatness came from the way he had gone from being dirt poor to being one of the socially elite, and all for the love of one woman. Gatsby wanted to believe that Daisy truly loved him, but unconsciously he knew how materialistic she was. He knew that the only way they could be together was if he was wealthy, and the quickest way to do that was illegally. F. Scott Fitzgerald succeeded in chronicling the views, beliefs, and actions of group of wealthy individuals in the nineteen twenties. He was able to do this with in-depth characters, an appealing plot, and a good sense of what really went on during that time period. Bibliography:

lone survivor free essay sample

The eyewitness account of Operation Redwing and the lost heroes of SEAL team 10 is a true story, that like most books about the SEALs, starts out for the most part with BUD/S. There is a bit of a lead up to this and it starts with Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor, going through his tough, country style upbringing in Texas. At a very young age Luttrell decides he wants to become a Navy Seal, seeking out help and training from a former Green Beret named Billy Shelton. The next portion of the book falls into the typical SEAL book. It begins with Luttrell’s sign-up with the Navy, leads through a short section of basic training, then takes the reader through BUD/S including the much documented â€Å"Hell Week. † I won’t go into the details of these portions, since it has been written about and shown on television so much. We will write a custom essay sample on lone survivor or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Lone Survivor does go through Luttrell’s specific experiences, difficulties, and accomplishments as well as moving into the less documented Demolitions and Tactics Training and a fascinating brief on sniper school. Next it is off to Afghanistan for a variety of different missions with a few details included. This leads into what becomes the primary mission and bulk of the book; Operation Redwing. A high up Taliban leader and known associate of Osama Bin Laden had risen up a most wanted list and it was up to Luttrell and his men to capture or kill him. On June 27 th, 2005 Marcus Luttrell, Danny Dietz, Michael Murphy, and Matthew Axelson, all SEALs, roped out of a helicopter into the rugged terrain of Afghanistan to take out their target. Luttrell initially had worries about the terrain and lack of cover that later proved just. The four SEALs quickly realized they were getting into any sniper’s worst nightmare, difficult terrain with no cover of any kind, so they had to backtrack and try to find better routes and hides. After being dug in for quite sometime, a trio of goat herders stumble upon the SEALS, causing a difficult moral and tactical decision. They knew if they let the three of them go they would more than likely notify Taliban members in the area, but if they killed them there would be not only moral  issues to deal with, but right or wrong they would also be crucified by the liberal media. The SEALs knew it would not matter whether it was the correct tactical decision and that by letting them go they may be causing their own deaths. After a lengthy discussion and tense vote, they decided to let the herders go. It did not take long at all to pay the price for this decision. Taliban fighters began ar riving on the top of the hill above the SEALs, searching for them. The SEALs were greatly outnumbered and once the firing started they truly had no reprieve as the Taliban fighters continuously rained down gunfire and RPGs from their superior position. Luttrell and his men had to constantly provide cover fire, retreat, and try to protect their flanks. The SEALs amazingly held their own for quite some time, but with so much lead coming down at them it was only a matter of time before the began taking hits. With unbelievable courage and valor, they would take hits, lock and load and keep blasting away at the enemy. Even with repetitive mortal wounds these studs would continue to pick their targets and fire away. However, the human body can only take so much damage before shutting down and for Danny, Michael (Mikey), and Matthew (Axe) that point was reached, leaving Marcus Luttrell on his own. Blown off a mountain and badly injured, Luttrell now had to hide and evade the enemies. Confrontation was out of the question, but still occurred in a few fire fights that Luttrell was able to come out of victorious and quickly move on to stay away from the enemy. Members of Luttrell’s SDV Team 1 and Navy SEAL Team 10 got word of what was happening and immediately assembled and flew out in a MH-47 helicopter. The heroic rescue team arrived at a drop location and once the back hatched was opened tragedy struck. A Taliban fighter launched a RPG directly through the open door, exploding inside the helicopter. The shot was disastrous, blowing the MH-47 out of the sky and killing everyone on board. Finally a bit of luck was had by Luttrell who was found by an Afghan that was not in favor of the Taliban, so he helped get the injured SEAL back to his village. The tribe decides to grant him Lokhay, which basically means the village will help, shelter, and most importantly protect him with their lives. This ends up being more than talk and the villagers truly risk everything to keep Luttrell safe. Lone Survivor finishes up with a wrap up of Luttrell’s experiences after the ordeal. It is an absolutely amazing account of heroism and courage. Reading the book not only gives me a greater appreciation for our Navy SEALs, but also for all our military personnel. Thank you to all that serve and have served!

Confucius And Confucianism Essays - Confucianism, Chinese Philosophy

Confucius And Confucianism Essays - Confucianism, Chinese Philosophy Confucius and Confucianism LIFE OF CONFUCIUS Confucius was believed to have been born in 551 BC., in the state of Lu, known today as the Shandong province. His parents, who died while he was a child, named him Kong Qui. Confucius was derived from the Latin word Kongfuzi which means Great Master Kong. Confucius was the most influential and respected philosopher in Chinese history. His ideas were the single strongest influence on Chinese society from around 100 BC. to the AD. 1900's. The Chinese government made his ideas the official state philosophy and many nearby countries honored his beliefs. Confucius wanted to gain the position as an adviser to a wise ruler, but he failed. He hoped to do this in order to be able to employ his ideas for reforming society. If it wasn't for the disciples of Confucius his teachings would have never been spread around China, and he would have never been made known. His teachings were never written down by him, but his conversations and sayings were written down by his disciples in the analects. CONFUCIANISM Confucianism was the single most important thing in Chinese life. It affected everything in China; education, government, and attitudes toward behavior in public and private life. Confucianism is not a religion, but it is more a philosophy and a guide to morality and good government. At the time Confucius was born, China was in a conezt state of war, and rapid political change altered the structure of Chinese society so much that people no longer respected the established behavioral guidelines. Confucius stated that the ideal person was one of good moral character. The ideal person was also truly reverent in worship and sincerely respected his father and his ruler. He was expected to think for himself, guided by definite rules of conduct. As Confucius said, he was expected to take "as much trouble to discover what was right as lesser men take to discover what will pay". Confucius believed that this type of behavior by rulers had a greater effect on the people than did laws or codes of punishment. So when these types of people were rulers, their moral example would inspire the people to lead good lives. Confucius died sometime around 479 B.C., and his philosophy was not very well known. If it weren't for his disciples his ideas would probably still be unknown. Confucius never wrote anything down himself; his disciples wrote all of his sayings down in a collection of books called the Analects. These contain all that modern day man knows about Confucius. There existed two important Confucian philosophers-Mencius (390-305 BC) and Xunzi (mid 200's B.C.). They held beliefs similar to Confucius but they were somewhat different. Mencius's viewpoint was that people were born good, and that they had to "preserve the natural compassion of the heart". Xunzi opposed this by saying that people could be good and live peacefully only if their minds were shaped by education and conduct. Both of these ideas parallel Confucius', in that they both state that people can be good. Confucianism was concerned primarily with the needs of society, and unlike Buddhism and Taoism, not the ability for a person to live in harmony with nature. Beginning in the 200's B.C. Buddhism and Taoism began to affect and reshape the ezdards of Confucianism, and things such as nature came into play. Around A.D. 200 to 600, there was a rapid decline in the Confucian Beliefs in China. This was partly because Confucianism now had to compete with Buddhism and Taoism, which were developed around this time. These religions were to Confucianism as night is to day, in other words, they were exact opposites. Buddhism and Taoism were largely concerned with the meaning of suffering and death, while Confucianism largely ignored these. The revival of Confucianism began around the 600's and was fully revived by the 700's. In the 1100's, there was a movement lead by Zhu-Xi called the Neo-Confucianism movement. He developed a branch of this movement known as the rational-wing, it dealt with the study of Li, the relationship between humans and nature. Another branch was called the intuitional-wing and it dealt mostly with enlightenment by a combination of meditation and moral action. In the 1900's there was a

Conflict - Essay Example Confidence is one of the key principles that guide my conflict handling approach. I always try my best to exude high level of confidence in dealing with conflicting issues. The major step towards having confidence is to evaluate the situation at hand, approach it with calmness and composure and have an open-minded approach (Kellett, 2007). While handling a conflict, I always fight the negative overtones to ensure that I do not appear fearful or panicky, while getting ready to compromise in the event it is necessary to do so that to achieve the conflict resolution. Therefore, one of the main strengths in handling conflicts is trying to control emotions and display confidence, which serves to show the other party that one is able to resolve the issues at hand, otherwise one may send out a message of weakness in a conflict situation (Dana, 2001). Another of my strength that works well in handling conflicts is open-mindedness, which allows me to approach a conflicting situation aware tha t there are different ways of bring the conflict to a resolution, and thus prepare for any of the ways. open-mindedness is a crucial approach towards resolving a conflict, since it opens various avenues through which individuals can handle the conflict, as opposed to rigidity, which makes individuals to approach a situation with only one expectation, an aspect that makes conflict resolution even harder, and may even accelerate the conflict, since rigid individuals do not leave any chance of compromise and negotiation (Lansford, 2008). Another of my strength in conflict resolution is the fact that I am considerate. This is an important character in conflict resolution, since it allows me to put into consideration all the issues that the other parties to the conflict are raising, and effectively come up with an agreement that is favorable to all the parties. Nevertheless, there are several areas that I need to enhance, to become well equipped for conflict handling. One such area is to lerance. I have very little tolerance for arrogance, something that can make me react without sufficient consideration. This ends-up creating even more problems. Therefore, tolerance to arrogance is one of the areas that I require to enhance, so that I can react calmly to people who are arrogant, since calmness and tolerance are major milestones towards conflict resolution (Tidwell, 2001). Another area that I need to enhance is patience. Whenever a conflict arises, I have the tendency of seeking for an instant solution, other than giving the whole situation time, and reverting to address it later. This has always made conflict resolution an onerous task for me, since being haste means that the people involved in a conflict will handle it out of their emotional imbalance, thus may not easily come to an amicable solution. While individuals take time to cool off and then handle a conflict, there are higher chances of getting to an agreement, since both parties are calm, sober and willi ng to listen, as opposed to where individuals are handling conflict with feelings of anger, resentment and emotional instability (Wandberg, 2001). There is a great need of taking personal responsibility for ones feelings (Kellett, 2007). This is because, taking responsibility means that an individual is in a good position to control their feelings, while also reasoning and considering other parties’ points of view (Lansford, 2008). This makes it easy to reach an agreement and
